It is spring again in Boulder, CO and after a long windy winter it is time to clean your oriental rugs, tile and grout, carpets, upholstery, and every other horizontal surface where the dust settled all winter. All Phase Carpet and Upholstery has been in business for over 18 years and we have the latest training, the most powerful equipment, and the friendliest employees to assure your satisfaction. Give us a call at (303) 938-1793 so you can spend your time planting flowers, hiking, biking, and anything else other than cleaning- let us care about the details so you don’t have to. People call us all the time asking how often they should be cleaning their carpets, rugs, and upholstery- here is a nice general guideline which assumes that you are vacuuming on a regular basis:

How Often Should I Get My Carpets Cleaned?

Cleaning Schedule

1-2 Working Adults: Every 12-18 Months

2 Adults & 2Children: Every 6-12 Months

Household of 5 or more: Every 3-6 Months

Household of 5+ with at least one pet: Every 3 months

College Students on the Hill: Every Monday after the weekend party

Have a fantastic day and we’ll see you around town and in the Bolder Boulder soon.

Hello all- I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving holiday and are working hard over the next few weeks to afford presents for all of your friends and loved one’s. I know that this year has been very difficult for many people here in Boulder County, and have been trying to find a way to help my neighbors keep their carpets clean while still having funds to give the important people in their life presents or who would rather give their money to help people in our community who are homeless or who are undergoing hard times.

This is what I have come up with to accomplish both of our goals:

One free room of carpet cleaning (up to a $115 value in Boulder County) to the first 10 homeowners who call us at (303) 938-1793 and make an appointment to have the room cleaned before December 18, 2009. We will be doing one free room per day until the 18th (M-F). If you rent your apartment and want to take part in this opportunity- just have your landlord contact us at (303) 938-1793. (Sorry- no mountain jobs available) We will be taking appointments on a first come- first served basis- so call as soon as you can to reserve your space.

Thank you and have a great holiday season!

From All Phase Cleaning Services to you.

Are “‘FREE ESTIMATES” really free?

This weekend one of our new clients here in Boulder, Colorado asked us why we do not come to their home to give them a free estimate as so many other carpet cleaning companies do. I wrote this little article to explain why- enjoy!

Sixteen years ago, we decided to run our business differently from almost every other carpet cleaning company in our area, because we did not like how many of the other companies did certain aspects of the business. Going to every home and meeting with a new client takes a considerable amount of time and is not free- the salesperson has to be paid- with your hard earned money. The way we give our free estimate is to give a ball park figure over the phone, so you know approximately how much the total will be. Then, when our technician arrives to do the cleaning, all the areas of your home are measured and carefully added up so an exact figure can be provided to you before the job begins.

We have found that giving you an exact price at the time of cleaning saves a considerable amount of time- time which we use to thoroughly clean your carpet, tile, or upholstery much better than a company which has chosen to pay a salesperson a significant portion of the proceeds. We would rather pay our technician who is actually doing the work a higher wage and give him all the time he needs to do the very best cleaning possible. Our long term clients agree that they prefer this use of their hard earned money rather than sharing quite a bit of it with a salesperson who is not cleaning anything.

I hope this small article helped you understand this topic. If you have any other questions about this or any other cleaning topic, please call us at (303) 938-1793 during regular business hours. Thanks, and have an incredible day

Here is the solution to your problems. All Phase Carpet and Upholstery (303) 938-1793 to the rescue!

Here is the challenge- one of these bottles of excellent wine will be sacrificed for this demonstration. We flipped a coin and the winner is: Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon-1966.

OK- your best friend just spilled wine on your carpet. How are you going to get it out?

Make sure you wear protective eye wear, and any other protective items you feel you need to do this process safely. Some of these products contain oxidizers and may pull the natural color out of the carpeting- test in an inconspicuous spot before using or attempting any of these procedures. If you feel you can not do this process in a safe and effective manner- call All Phase Carpet and Upholstery at (303) 938-1793 to arrange an appointment.

Here is the Wine Spotting Guide.

First- blot the spot

Keep pressing down until you can not remove any more of the color- keep on turning the towel so a fresh new area is exposed until no more of the wine transfers to the towel. Never rub- just press down hard.

Please do not skip this extremely important step:

Keep on blotting.

You are almost done!

Ahhhh!

OK- you have blotted every last drop that will transfer- now on to the next step.

Second-Apply spotter to the entire area affected by the wine spill.

Now brush it in- gently- do not go back and forth, but brush in one direction at a time.

Keep on brushing in the spotter until you have finished the entire area.

Third step: Use a spotting machine.

Extract (vacuum) up all the spotting solution- make sure you keep going until you do not see any more of the solution being picked up by the tool. (Do not use the emulsifier supplied with many home spotting machines- they will only cause you problems in later steps- use hot water only.) Perform multiple dry strokes (no water flowing) to make sure you do not over wet the carpet.

Keep on extracting……

Fourth step: Red dye stain remover

Now you can mix up your red dye stain remover:

Mix 1/2 ounce of Red Dye stain Remover with 2 ounces of sudsy household ammonia and 2 ounces of water. Mix well and use quickly for best results.

Spray until entire area is saturated.

Gently Brush in the solution.

Place a wall paper steamer or similar tool on top of the spot for 10 minutes, or until the spot disappears. If the spot is still visible- repeat the process. Check frequently to make sure that no carpet dye loss is occurring.

If a yellow residue still remains- apply red stain remover to the area and gently brush in the spotter.

Place a damp towel over the area and place a non-Teflon coated steam iron set on medium to high heat on top of the towel. Press down on the iron with a moderate amount of pressure for 40-60 seconds or until bubbling subsides on the sides of the iron. Lift iron, inspect towel and stain and repeat process until no more stain is visible or no more wine transfer occurs. Stop immediately if you notice any dye transfer occurring from the carpet fibers- the only thing you want to remove is the wine. Stay with the iron the entire time it is on the towel. Remember- steam is hot- be very careful.

Here is a picture of the area after all of the steps were followed. I still notice a bit of a stain, so I will do one final step- wear gloves and eye protection when using this product.

In this step, I am using a product called StainZone that will oxidize the remaining wine color from the fibers. Fill a sprayer with the ready to use product and spray the area until saturated. Allow the spotter to dwell for 5 to 10 minutes and then gently brush the area. Blot with a clean white towel. Rinse and extract the area to remove as much of the stain and moisture as possible.

If any residual stain remains, apply StainZone again and follow the same procedure. Allow to dry completely.

When the area is totally dry- extract remaining residue from the surface before you let anybody use the area. You are finished!

Here is a picture of the affected area after all of these steps:

There is a still slight tint of the dye remaining, but the first rule in removal of spots is to do no harm- if I keep going, I risk removal of the carpet fiber dye, which would leave a white spot on the carpet that would be very noticeable for the life of the carpet.

I hope you have learned how to remove red wine from carpet or at least that your cleaning professional has to know a lot more than you imagined to do the job required of a Master IICRC Certified Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner.

Have a wonderful day!

Here is the Solution to your problems! All Phase Carpet and Upholstery to the rescue! (303) 938-1793

Have your employees or husbands ever done this to your beautiful carpet or upholstery?

Whoops!!

According to our excellent employees in our Janitorial division, All Phase Cleaning Services (303) 938-1793, Coffee spills are one of the most common spills that occur in the office environment. They are also one of the most difficult spots to manually remove, mainly because our clients try to remove them by themselves during the day when the coffee spill occurs. If the spot is not removed properly, (at least blotted immediately), it can become a coffee stain- which is a horrible permanent eye sore, usually located right at the entrance to the conference room, office, or kitchen area. Wicking of the spot on commercial carpet is also a huge concern. Wicking normally occurs when the person cleaning up the spot does not know what they are doing- it occurs when the components of the coffee just keep on coming up again and again from the backing of the carpet to the surface of the carpet- this can be very frustrating- especially when the Chairman of the Board is visiting the office in a few days! If you are not able to clean the spot in a proper manner when the accident occurs, a thorough blotting and application of a powder called “Stain Absorb” can minimize wicking problems later. Call us if you have questions about this procedure at the above phone number.

Coffee Spills in the home

Oh no- not on the white pillow!

Of course, both sides are affected.

Coffee Spills are also a large factor in the home. One of our neighbors called four days ago in tears and asked if I could please come over and try to clean up a cup of coffee that she had spilled on her beautiful near new off-white nylon carpet a few hours before. She was almost frantic, as she was hosting a dinner party the next day which she had been planning for over a month. I asked why she had not called right when it happened, and she admitted that she had tried to remove the spot by herself first with a store bought all purpose cleaner and a scrub brush. I rushed over to her home and was confronted with a very large spot that had obviously been scrubbed to death. The spot was at least 3 times larger then it had been originally. Using all the things I had been taught in IICRC classes, and in the field for 15 years, I was able to clean, and remove the coffee spill and all the residue. I was able to reduce the effects of the scrubbing most of the way, but not 100% as vigorous back and forth scrubbing can permanently damage carpet fibers.

Coffee Spotting Guide

That brings up why I decided to write this little coffee spotting guide- to help you the office owner, or you the homeowner when a coffee spill occurs in your home or office. Make sure you bookmark this site so if this happens to you, you will be able to find it again! Make sure you apply a protector such as Maxim, or Scotchguard to the area after you have removed the spot. Enjoy!

First things first- Blotting.

Every time a spill occurs, make sure you gently blot up the spot using a clean white towel. Keep on blotting and folding the towel until no more of the fluid transfers to the towel- use as many towels as it takes to do so. This is a very important step- so don’t try to save time by skipping ahead.

Keep going! Do this step until nothing is transferring to the towel.

Second- Determining the type of coffee and additives, and extraction of the spot.

Attempting the removal of a decaffeinated coffee spill can be very different from the process of the removal of a caffeinated coffee spill because, in some cases, the decaf process changes the coffee in many important ways. Decaf coffee- depending upon which method was used to decaffeinate the beans, may have a brown dye added after the decaf process as the color can be removed along with the caffeine. The brown dye makes the spot more difficult to remove, as an extra step may be needed to remove the dye. Many people also add sugar, milk, cream, or flavorings to the coffee. Each additional substance added to the coffee may require additional steps and procedures to remove the entire spot. Heat is another huge factor. The hotter the coffee, the more difficult it will be to remove the spot. The heat enables the dyes to penetrate into the carpet or upholstery fibers much easier. Once you determine the source and ingredients in the coffee, you can attempt removal of the spot with a spotting machine or call a professional to do so- as soon as possible is best. Apply a safe spotter (make sure the PH of the spotter is appropriate for the type of effected fiber- especially on upholstery or wool carpet- the label on a good spotting agent will tell you if it is the right spotter for the fibers you are cleaning) to the entire area and use a gentle brush to agitate the affected area:

Apply spotter to entire effected area:

Brush gently in one direction only- never scrub.

When you are finished with the application of the spotter and brushing it in, use the machine to begin extracting everything that can be extracted at this point. In a hand spotter machine, I use hot water, or hot water mixed with an acidic rinse agent to extract the coffee and all the spotting solution applied. I never use the emulsifier that comes with the machines- most cause more problems than they solve.

Keep on extracting until you do not notice any more change in the color of the spot. Make sure to use frequent dry passes (no water from the machine- just vacuum) to minimize over-wetting.

On upholstery, make sure you clean the entire piece that is effected to eliminate the chance of watermarks.

If possible, take the cover off the pillow so you can remove any moisture from the pillow filling, and so you will be able to extract the pillowcase on a flat surface. Make sure to place the cover back on before it dries- some fibers tend to shrink, and it will be very difficult to place the pillow back in the case after it has dried.

Third- you will want to apply a spotter typically known as coffee stain remover.

You will have to mix the coffee stain remover according to directions- make sure the water is as hot as possible to maximize it’s effectiveness.

Spray the mixed solution on the stained area until it is saturated.

Lightly brush the area:

Follow the directions on the spotter you choose- exactly. Spray directly on the surface until completely moistened. The chemical will begin working immediately, but make sure to let it dry completely. If the spot still remains, re-apply. Vacuum and extract the area after the treatment has completely dried. If there is still a bit of color remaining, we have found that applying urine stain remover is effective for removing the final stain color- make sure you extract the urine stain remover after the area has dried. The use of an absorbent powder may also be needed if wicking from the cushion occurs. The wicking process is one reason why you see spots return again and again- that is why proper blotting, extraction, and removal of all cleaning agents is so critical.

If decaffeinated coffee is the cause of the spot, then a professional such as, All Phase Carpet and Upholstery- (303) 938-1793 should be called in to remove the dye that is still visible as another extensive step is involved.

Here are a few pictures of the results obtained by following each step in this article. I hope you learned how to resolve a catastrophic situation that occurs on a regular basis in Boulder, and Broomfield Counties. Remember, this article is only a general guide- if you are not comfortable performing any of these procedures- call a professional company in to do the job. Use gloves and eye protection when handling any of these chemicals.

Here is a picture of the finished carpet- even the areas that were not extracted look pretty good! We only blotted, and extracted the middle, but applied the coffee stain remover to the entire area!

Both sides of the cotton pillow turned out very well.

Free Cleaning for referrals!

One of our most popular programs is our referral program where you can receive cash or free cleaning for referring your friends and neighbors to us. You can receive either cash, or a referral certificate which entitles you to free carpet, upholstery, tile and grout cleaning, or janitorial services in the amount of the referral certificate. Here is how it works!

For each new client you refer to All Phase Carpet and Upholstery, or All Phase Cleaning Services, we will send you a 10% Referral Bonus Certificate when the new client pays their invoice. How many times have you referred a friend to a great movie and received a referral certificate from the theater? Never? Same here, and I refer my friends to many companies and individuals each day who have never sent me a thank you card, much less a certificate. Our business has been growing for over 15 years- mainly due to referrals from very satisfied clients- that is why we set up this program- to reward all of our clients for having faith in our ability to do the best cleaning in Boulder County. The more work you refer to us, the more cash or free cleaning you can receive! If you wish to learn more, please call us at (303) 938-1793.

No Risk Trial Offer

Remember- we are also offering a ”100 square foot free No Risk Trial Offer” in the month of April for all new clients who own their own home so your friends and neighbors can see for themselves the fantastic cleaning job we do compared to any other company in Boulder County. If you wish to learn more, please call All Phase Carpet and Upholstery at (303) 938-1793 today!

I hope all of you are having a great spring. Ed.

It is getting close to the Christmas season, and I was trying to think of a good way to help our friends and clients this season. My youngest son reminded me about the big Christmas tree spot our neighbor had last year after they removed their Christmas tree and how incredibly difficult it was to remove because they had not protected their carpet with Teflon when they had it cleaned . So this is what we have come up with to help all of you in Boulder, Lafayette, Erie, Louisville, Superior, and Broomfield save your carpet from the dreaded Christmas tree spot:

Christmas tree area cleaning special- Only $259.00

The special includes-

Up to 100 square feet of carpet deep cleaned using an rx20 rotary drimaster. We will clean your carpet in the room where you are going to place your tree.

Up to 100 square feet of carpet protected with Maxim Teflon carpet protector to make it much easier to remove the tree stain if a spill or other accident occurs.

We will come back after the holidays and clean the same area to attempt removal of any holiday spots that occurred so your carpet looks clean and smells fresh for the new year!

Hello all. I hope all of you are having a great holiday season so far. Our company (All Phase Carpet and Upholstery) is busy as usual cleaning carpet, upholstery, and tile and grout all over Boulder County for our wonderful clients who are cleaning for health, and getting ready for holiday parties and relatives who are coming to visit.

Have any of you ever wondered why carpet cleaning companies have such different prices? It seems like there should just be one price, doesn’t it? The best analogy I can come up with for the disparity in pricing of carpet cleaning is the similar difference in the pricing of automobiles.

I just bought a new 4×4 truck last week and was amazed at all the selection, colors, and packages out there- after all it is just a truck and all trucks are the same- right? Obviously all trucks are not the same as there are a huge number of factors that determine the price of each truck. Some trucks come fully loaded with every option known to man, and others were totally stripped down.

Carpet and upholstery cleaning prices in Boulder County are different for the same reasons. Each company in our area offers a different level of service, method of cleaning, experience level, and guarantee. Just like the automotive market, you have a wide variety of companies and models to choose from. Our company offers a very high level of experience and IICRC training, top of the line safe cleaning chemicals, and powerful equipment which costs us more to operate than a company that only exists to do a bare bones job. We only do a few jobs per day so we can show up on time and spend all the time we need to at your home to do the very best carpet, upholstery, or tile and grout cleaning job possible. When we show up, we give you a firm price that already includes the majority of the services the clients we have been serving for over fifteen years have informed us they require. A company charging $19.95 per room is not going to be able to include any of the essential spotting services that are already in our price, and the cheap company will have to add on to their total price for each spot, closet, traffic lane prespray, acidic rinse, use of turbo fans, use of a truck mount machine, etc. By the time they’re finished adding up all the extras, their price could be double our up-front price. I don’t know about you, but when I buy a service or product, I do not like being nickle and dimed to death with extra charges for something that should be included.

If you feel the same way, give us a call at (303) 938-1793 or go to our main website to learn more. Thanks and have a great day, Ed Dillon.
